As the year 2023 comes to an end, it’s time to turn our attention to the future – exactly as you want it to be, filled with opportunities and dreams waiting to be achieved. A great way of transforming your dreams and aspirations into reality and helping you stay focused on your goals is the vision board, a visual representation (either a physical board or a digital one) of your desired life in 2024. Ask yourself: what should my vision board for the 2024 picture? Read more for my guide on how to create one!
I’ve personally found vision boards to be an incredibly effective way to motivate you to achieve the goals and dreams you currently have for the next year. At the end of 2022, I created a vision board with a focus on travel (my #1 goal of all time), personal growth, well-being, and career development (for those who are just beginning to know me, I’m a performance marketing specialist). Did I achieve all my goals? Almost! But I truly believe I wouldn’t been able to achieve not even half of them without a vision board to keep me on track.
How did 2023 go for me?
For 2023, I had a strong desire to travel to the Czech Republic, which I have never visited before, and to Spain, where I have been traveling to in 2022, but I didn’t get the chance to see more places than Seville (which is amazing! you must see it). One travel location I had on this year’s vision board was to visit Greece one more time, but I had to defend my master’s degree and didn’t get the chance (but I have been there more than a couple of times and it’s so close to my country I will surely get another chance to visit it in the future).
Other goals included successfully defending my master’s degree, improving my posture (sign up for a Barre class – it does wonders for your posture, especially the upper back), learning to cook, focusing on my diet more, start driving more in the city (which is a jungle), increase my income by at least 20%. And I achieved them all and also increased my productivity with these 5 hacks. All thanks to my vision board! Go to the end of the article if you want to see my vision board.
These experiences reinforced my belief in the power of vision boards, which I have made since I was 12-13 years old, that having a clear, attainable goal in mind will help you develop the necessary strategies to achieve them.
Without further ado, here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your vision board for 2024:
1. Reflect and Align Your Expectations
Before starting to create your vision board, there are some questions to ask yourself that will help you get a grasp of your current situation and which direction you should go in with your personal and professional life. What are your deepest desires, aspirations, and dreams? What areas of your life would you like to improve? Should I make a certain change in my life? How can I achieve those goals? Are they achievable with the current state I’m in? Do I have the income/time off to help me achieve my personal goals?
You can grab a notepad and start writing down the answers to the questions. That will help you with the next steps.
2. Set Measurable, Attainable Goals
Once you have a clear understanding of your intentions for 2024, break them into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals (they’re what we call SMART goals in business). For example, instead of saying “I want to travel more next year”, set a SMART goal that sounds like “In April 2024, I will take a trip to Japan for 7 days”. However, if you don’t have the funds for the trip you want to take, another SMART goal will sound like “For me to take the trip to Japan in June, I will save $300 each month, starting January”, because, by the time the trip comes, you will also have the funds available.
3. Gather Inspiration for Your Vision Board
Start collecting images, quotes, and even songs (of course you can’t display them, but you can add them to your playlist and listen to them every day) that represent your goals. A great source of inspiration is Pinterest, but you can also take a look at Instagram, Google Images, and online stores (if you have a shopping goal ready for your board). Print those images if you want to create a physical collage.
4. Design Your Vision Board
A method that works best for me is to add my biggest goal at the end, making sure it’s in the center of my vision board. That way you will always see it the first time. Start arranging your images in every way you like and that inspires you. You must love your vision board every time you see it!
5. Add a personal touch
Don’t limit yourself to generic goals. No goal is small enough if that’s what you think will make your life better in 2024. Want starting rollerblading? Add it. Want to dye your hair? Add it. Want to keep your room organized? You guessed it! Add it.
6. Review and Revise
Regularly review your board throughout 2024 to check your progress and make adjustments as needed. You evolve, therefore your goals will evolve too. Add new elements, remove those that are outdated, and change the direction of your board as you like.
If you read all the steps and still feel unsure about what to add, here are a few types of goals to include in your vision board.
Types of Goals to Include on Your Vision Board
- Career Goals: Your dream job, your dream salary, your dream position, your work environment
- Financial Goals: Increase your salary, pay off your debts, increase your savings, invest more
- Personal Growth Goals: new skills, new hobbies, learn a new language, start coding, learn Photoshop, learn photography or videography, improve your cooking, go to therapy, improve your presentation skills or public speaking
- Health and Wellness Goals: improve your diet, go to the gym, take your vitamins, solve your health problems, create a skin routine, prioritize your well-being
- Relationship Goals: start dating, start reconnecting with your partner, find a hobby you both enjoy, go on more date nights, go out with your friends more, host a board game night, call your mom, brother, father, grandmother, etc. at least 2 times a week, play with your pet every day
- Travel Goals: visit France, visit Kenya, visit India, visit Japan, visit Colombia, visit a new city in your country, go skiing, go on a culinary trip, go to the beach
- Material Goals: buy that golden necklace, buy a new car, buy a new home (in this economy? Are you joking? – no harm in dreaming about it), buy a new laptop or a new phone, buy those heels you have in your cart since 2 months ago
What Tools to Use to Create Your 2024 Vision Board?
When I look for a tool to help me design my vision board and any other visual creatives I may need either for my job or my personal project, I focus on personalization. It should be easy to drag, change, filter, crop, and browse images to use in my project. That’s why Canva is the perfect tool. You can start by signing up, and then search for inspiration. You can search for “Vision Board” and Canva will show you multiple designs. There are multiple templates to use, either landscape or portrait orientation (especially if you want to add your vision board as a background on your phone, I like to do that too).
Another platform I previously used is Pinterest. Just create a new board and add your images there. Bonus points because you have multiple sources of inspiration all in the same place.
